Casual Armor.io combat on your iPhone / iPad

Never judge an app by its cover, because this mobile game looks very basic but is just as likely to draw you in as the latest 3D action title. The addictive and fast paced gameplay of Armor.io is exciting and dynamic, based on the core idea seen in other .io games like Agar.io and Slither.io. However, this title adds more gameplay elements that make it more competitive and more involved for the player. Better still, this game is free to play on Android devices.

A simple idea with a lot to offer

At the basic level, Armor.io is similar to Agar.io and other such games. In fact, it’s creators also made Snake.io and Cel. This is a multiplayer game which you play solo, while interacting with anyone and everyone else who plays. In other words, it’s an online sandbox where you’re given freedom to roam, but so is everyone else. You start the game with a small tank which is yours to control, a small 2D graphic. The main mechanic of the game features moving around a space to collect items, which allow you to build that tank up, increasing its abilities and size. Taking out other tanks is a great way to level up, so the aim is to survive as long as possible.

Not a visual treat, but subtly addictive

Armor.io is not a pretty game. Your tank is a basic 2D sprite seen from above, while the items you collect are just coloured geometric shapes. The world is a white board. However, this still works because it’s part of the charm of the game, plus it helps to eliminate lag, something this does very well compared to other .io multiplayer games. The creators have added a few extra touches too which make this game stand out from the crowd. One such addition is a dual joystick system, giving you two controls, one for movement and the other for aiming and firing the tank. Others like Slither.io only let you move. The next big change is the variety of upgrades available. Your tank can build up through 60 levels and use many weapon types: a double cannon, a triple cannon, double-ended turrets and more. Each one changes the dynamic of the game and takes some learning to use well. Lastly, you do not strictly have to play online if you prefer not to.

Armor up for combat

There is a lot in Armor.io which elevates it above other apps of its kind. Add to that the fact that it’s also free to play and it’s clear why over 1,000,000 people have downloaded it! The game has a strong competitive angle with being able to fire at other tanks and the mechanic of constantly getting bigger and better is very compelling. Those looking for a graphical treat may not enjoy the game, but give it a try and it will surprise you.
